Singer Jeong Dongwon Caught in Blackmail Scandal Over Unlicensed Driving Video

Trot sensation Jeong Dongwon faces a surprising twist in his career as he becomes the target of a blackmail case involving a reckless driving incident. His agency steps up with a firm response and an apology.

Jeong Dongwon’s Past Driving Mishap Reignites Headlines

Trot music rising star Jeong Dongwon has found himself under a harsh spotlight—not because of a new single or a TV appearance, but due to a blackmail case tied to an old unlicensed driving clip.

Blackmail Attempt Over Secretly Recorded Video

According to Jeong’s agency, Showplay Entertainment, a close acquaintance of the singer—referred to as “A”—illegally accessed Jeong’s phone and stumbled upon private photos and videos. Among these was a video showing Jeong briefly practicing driving without a license near his hometown of Hadong, captured by someone in the car.

The so-called friend didn’t keep this to themselves. Instead, A and their accomplices threatened to release the incriminating footage unless they received over 200 million KRW (around $145,000). Thankfully, Jeong immediately reported them to police instead of giving in to demands. Suspects have now been arrested and are facing trial.

Agency Issues Apology and Vows Education

Showplay Entertainment apologized on Jeong’s behalf, stating, “We deeply regret the incident and apologize to fans and the public.” They also admitted the singer’s mistake, adding that, “Jeong is reflecting seriously on his actions and feels remorse.”

The agency emphasized that they plan to better support Jeong’s growth as a mature and responsible public figure. “Proper guidance will be enforced to prevent a similar situation from happening again,” the statement read.

Public Image at Risk?

While Jeong shot to fame after his appearance on Mr. Trot, this unexpected scandal could dent his boy-next-door image. Fans and insiders alike are watching closely to see how public opinion—and potential legal consequences—might affect his career trajectory.

Still Climbing the Popularity Charts

Despite the controversy, Jeong is still active in fan polls. He recently ranked 10th in the Netizen Awards for Best Male Singer with 2.8% of the vote (3,367 votes). Whether the scandal derails this momentum or becomes a turning point remains to be seen.

For now, one thing’s clear—K-pop or trot, public trust is just as critical as talent.
