From Heartthrob to Industry Ally

Byun Woo-seok, quickly rising as one of K-drama’s most beloved leading men, is now stepping behind the camera—sort of. The celebrated actor is partnering with the Seoul Independent Film Festival (SIFF) to launch a new creative support program titled “SIFF X Byun Woo-seok: Shorts on 2025.”

What’s the Project All About?

This isn’t just a celebrity putting his name on a cause. Byun Woo-seok will be directly involved in selecting and mentoring creators as they bring short films on the theme of “love” to life. Applications for the program open October 10 and run through October 24. Up to three projects will receive production support totaling 30 million won (about $22,000 USD).

Supporting Indie Cinema—One Short Film at a Time

The need for this kind of support is clearer than ever. While mainstream Korean cinema has faced challenges, the indie scene is buzzing. SIFF’s last edition drew a record-breaking 1,805 entries—evidence that creativity thrives even in tough times. This collaboration aims to channel that creative energy into future-defining films.

Byun Woo-seok: More Than Just a Pretty Face

You probably know him best from Twinkling Watermelon, Strong Girl Nam-soon, and rom-com flicks like 20th Century Girl and Soulmate. But it’s his breakout role in Lovely Runner that catapulted him to global stardom. Now, with his upcoming lead role in the Netflix series Solo Leveling, he’s proving he’s got serious range—and heart.

“I want to give back to the creative community that shaped me. Supporting indie filmmakers is one way to help build the future of Korean cinema,” Byun shared through his agency, VARO Entertainment.

How It Works

  • Theme: Love (in all its forms)
  • Eligible creators: Must have prior directing experience in short films
  • Submission period: October 10–24, 2024
  • Final announcement: 51st SIFF, 2025
  • Goal: Complete the project by August 2026

The process includes both written and interview evaluations, and selected creators will also benefit from expert mentoring and collaboration with SIFF producers. The final films will debut at the SIFF next year and be released through its distribution channels.

The Big Picture

Since 2009, the Seoul Independent Film Festival has nurtured Korea’s indie scene through funding, distribution, and development programs. With this new initiative—and the backing of one of K-drama’s biggest stars—it’s leveling up its support with a full production-to-distribution pipeline.

The 2025 edition of SIFF runs from November 27 to December 5, so mark your calendars. If you’re an emerging filmmaker with a story to tell and the chops to tell it, this might just be your moment.

As Byun Woo-seok helps shine a light on tomorrow’s storytellers, one thing’s certain: indie film in Korea isn’t just surviving—it’s thriving.
