A New Side of Jang Dongyoon

In his latest pictorial for Harper’s BAZAAR Korea, actor Jang Dongyoon flips effortlessly between soft and sharp—kind of like a teen heartthrob with a secret identity. Dressed in breezy, natural looks and striking intense poses, he gave off both boy-next-door charm and haunting thriller vibes. Honestly, a plot twist in human form.

Why He Took on The Bequeathed

Jang stars in the new SBS Friday-Saturday drama The Bequeathed (Kamakiri in Japanese), playing Cha Suyeol, the son of a convicted serial killer. It’s a dark, emotional role that he didn’t take lightly.

“I chose this project almost entirely because of director Byun Youngjoo,” Jang said in an interview following the shoot. “Her past works like Helpless and The Murderer’s Stereotype made me curious about how she’d explore human conflict and emotion within a thriller.”

He called the filming process a balancing act of tension and responsibility, but ultimately rewarding.

The Emotional Tightrope

Suyeol isn’t your typical K-drama leading man. He’s juggling intense emotional baggage, including deep-seated resentment toward his mother—who, by the way, is a serial murderer.

“The hardest part was contrasting Suyeol’s daily life as a detective with the raw emotional outbursts he has toward his mother,” Jang shared. “We talked a lot about subtle emotional cues while filming. If you overdo it, the moment feels too extreme.”

On Being an Actor, Long-Term

When asked if there was a moment he realized acting was truly his calling, Jang gave a grounded, introspective response.

“It wasn’t one big dramatic aha moment. I’m constantly questioning whether I’m on the right path, whether I’m growing,” he said. “I believe—and hope—I’m moving in the right direction, even if it’s slow. I want to act for a long time. There’s so much to learn, and I genuinely enjoy being on set.”

Where to Find Him Next

Jang Dongyoon’s full pictorial and interview can be found in the September issue of Harper’s BAZAAR Korea. With The Bequeathed now airing, fans can see his most emotionally layered performance yet—packed with pain, poise, and maybe a few plot twists.

Are we entering the Jang Dongyoon thriller era?

If his performance is anything like his gaze in that pictorial—steady, intense, and unafraid—then yes, absolutely.
