Who is Taeil and Why Is He on Trial Again?

Former NCT and NCT 127 member Taeil is back in court. On June 17, the Seoul High Court held the first hearing in his appeals trial. Prosecutors have once again demanded a 7-year prison sentence, citing the “extreme severity” of his crimes.

The Case: What Happened?

Taeil and two acquaintances are accused of sexually assaulting a foreign woman after allegedly getting her drunk in a bar in Itaewon, a nightlife hotspot in Seoul. They then transported her to a residence in Banpo-dong, where the victim reportedly lost consciousness and was assaulted.

Back in July, a lower court handed Taeil a 3.5-year prison sentence and ordered him to complete 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program. The court also imposed a 5-year employment ban from facilities related to minors and people with disabilities. Both Taeil and the prosecution appealed the verdict—Taeil seeking leniency, the prosecution seeking a harsher penalty.

Prosecutors: “The Crime Was Gruesome”

At the latest hearing, prosecutors maintained their stance. Their statement: “The crime was extremely serious and malicious.” They urged the court to stick to the original prosecution demand of a seven-year sentence.

Taeil’s legal team argued for leniency. They presented statements showing his remorse, including letters from acquaintances and mention of Taeil’s mother resigning from her job due to the scandal. A representative said Taeil is “deeply reflecting on his actions,” and that the victim has accepted his apology.

Fall from Fame: From K-pop Star to Controversy

Taeil previously debuted with NCT U in 2016 and promoted as part of both NCT and NCT 127 under SM Entertainment. However, after criminal details surfaced last August, SM announced his withdrawal from the group. His exclusive contract with the label was terminated by October.

What’s Next?

The final ruling of this second trial is scheduled for October 17. Whether the court will uphold the lighter sentence or grant the prosecution’s demand for seven years remains to be seen. Regardless of the outcome, the case marks one of the most shocking downfalls in recent K-pop history.

A Public Reckoning for Accountability in K-pop?

As more cases emerge involving idols and misconduct, K-pop has been facing a cultural reckoning. Fans are questioning where the line between entertainment and accountability stands—and what consequences should follow once it’s crossed.
