When the cameras stopped rolling, the trash kept piling

A recent filming mishap on the scenic island of Jeju has left a stain on an upcoming Disney+ K-drama. The production team behind “The Deal” (Korean title: Hwanho), starring Kim Seonho and Bae Suzy, was caught up in controversy after allegedly leaving trash behind at a filming location.

How it started: An online post sparked the outrage

The issue flared up when a local netizen posted on social media, calling out a drama crew for dumping litter in a wooded area—”even fan-sent cup holders were left behind,” they wrote, alongside a video clip from the scene. The post quickly went viral, with K-drama fans expressing disappointment and frustration.

Who’s taking responsibility?

Officials in Jeju’s Aewol-eup area confirmed that the production violated local waste disposal laws and levied a fine of 1 million Korean won (about $750). According to the Jeju City Office, the fine falls under Article 68 of South Korea’s Waste Management Act.

Things could’ve been worse: authorities confirmed that while gas canisters were left on-site, there was no evidence they had been ignited. And since it wasn’t wildfire season, the presence of these items didn’t result in additional penalties.

The production company responds

A representative from production company SHOWBOX admitted fault, explaining that “filming ended late at night, and the crew couldn’t properly clean up the set in the dark.” They issued a formal apology:

“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused due to inadequate cleanup. We immediately returned to the location to remove all waste and coordinated with local authorities.”

They added that stricter measures will be taken in future shoots to prevent another incident like this.

Why fans care so much

Environmental responsibility is a hot topic in South Korea, especially when it comes to public spaces like Jeju, a popular vacation and filming destination dubbed “the Hawaii of Korea.” Fans also see it as a matter of respect—for both the local community and the K-drama fandom that often goes out of its way to support productions by sending coffee trucks and gifts.

What’s next for “The Deal”?

Despite the controversy, anticipation is high for “The Deal”, which marks the onscreen reunion of Kim Seonho and Bae Suzy—last seen together in the hit drama Start-Up. The series will stream exclusively on Disney+ via its “Star” platform.

Final take

K-dramas may be fiction, but the impact of their production is very real. This incident is a reminder that even behind the cameras, accountability matters. Will the industry clean up its act—literally and metaphorically? Fans will be watching.
