Soyeon Returns to Her Rap Roots in ‘HIP POP Princess’

I-dle’s Soyeon returns to the fierce world of rap survival shows—but this time, she’s calling the shots as the main producer and MC of 'HIP POP Princess,' a new K-hip hop audition show airing on U-NEXT.

From Contestant to Queenmaker

Nine years ago, Soyeon left a lasting impression on the brutal survival show Unpretty Rapstar. Now, she’s back—not as a rookie rapper, but as the main producer and MC of HIP POP Princess, a fresh K-JP survival project airing exclusively on U-NEXT starting October 16.

“It’s incredibly meaningful for me,” Soyeon said. “This show sparked my journey as a self-producing idol. I’m honored to come back in a role where I can mentor the next generation of artists.”

What Is ‘HIP POP Princess’?

Think Unpretty Rapstar meets Global Popstar Academy. HIP POP Princess is a Japan-Korea joint project bringing together female rappers and idol trainees from both countries. The twist? These girls aren’t just performing—they’re creating. Tracks, choreography, and image: it’s all on them.

Joining Soyeon on the judging panel are heavy hitters like Dynamic Duo’s Gaeko, global choreographer RIEHATA, and Takanori Iwata of J Soul Brothers. Each producer brings a specialized skill—rap, dance, performance—which Soyeon says creates the perfect chemistry.

Soyeon’s Double Duty: MC & Producer

Pulling double duty is no joke. As the MC, Soyeon keeps the atmosphere upbeat and inclusive. As the main producer, she evaluates fiercely, prioritizing raw talent over flash.

“Just like when I competed on Unpretty Rapstar, I’m only focused on skill,” she said. “I want these girls to shine based purely on what they can do.”

Her leadership style? A mix of tough love and big-sis energy. “Sometimes you need to be honest; other times, nurturing. I’m here to help them grow without losing themselves.”

Audition Shows Are Evolving—And So Is K-Hip Hop

The show isn’t just about battling—it’s about building. “What makes HIP POP Princess special is it’s not just manufactured drama,” Soyeon explains. “Viewers get to see the creative process in real time. You’re watching these girls become artists, not just idols.”

As K-Hip hop continues to expand, merging with global pop sounds and aesthetics, this show could mark a new generation of boundary-pushing performers—ones who don’t just rap the bars but write them too.

Mark Your Calendars

HIP POP Princess premieres October 16 on U-NEXT, with new episodes every Thursday. If you’ve missed the raw rapping, prestige judging, and true DIY idol energy, this one’s for you. And with Soyeon at the helm, expect nothing less than fierce.

You never forget your first rap battle—but coming back as the boss? That’s legendary.
