From Underdog to Unexpected Fiancée

The premiere episode of the Genie TV original K-drama, ‘The Kind Woman: Bu Se-mi’, aired on May 29 in Korea—and it wasted no time pulling viewers into a tangled web of mystery, power, and a proposal no one saw coming.

Strong Ratings, Stronger Start

According to Nielsen Korea, the debut episode scored a 2.4% national viewership (2.3% in the Seoul metropolitan area), making it the highest-rated first episode of any Genie TV original to date. The drama’s mix of fast pacing, layered characters, and a suspense-rich setting clearly struck a chord.

A Life-Changing Interview

At the heart of the story is Kim Yeong-ran, played by Jeon Yeo-bin, a down-and-out woman who applies for the job of private bodyguard to chaebol chairman Ga Seong-ho (played by Moon Sung-keun). But it’s far from a glamorous gig.

Rejected due to her criminal record—she once served time for stealing sanitary pads as a child—Yeong-ran hits rock bottom when she loses even her home, thanks to her scheming mother.

Enter the Chairman—with a Hidden Agenda?

But fate has other plans. Chairman Seong-ho sees something in Yeong-ran during her tense interview, and despite her rough appearance, he decides to hire her. Her first day at the lavish mansion quickly spirals into a psychological game of cat and mouse.

Yeong-ran finds hidden cameras around the house and senses a tense undercurrent among the Ga family members. Soon, Seong-ho tells her about his real daughter—who, contrary to the press, wasn’t a tragic victim of illness but was murdered. His adopted daughter, Ga Seon-yeong (played by model-turned-actress Jang Yoon-ju), is a key suspect.

A Proposal That Shook Viewers

During a private conversation in his secret study, Seong-ho drops a bombshell—right when viewers feared a deadly mission was incoming. Instead, he offers Yeong-ran… a marriage proposal. Wait—what?

Was this part of some revenge plot? A power move? Or something even more twisted? Needless to say, fans are dying for answers.

Thrills, Secrets, and Stellar Performances

Jeon Yeo-bin’s raw performance adds a gritty authenticity to Yeong-ran’s journey from discarded misfit to someone enmeshed in a powerful family’s darkest secrets. Directed by Park Yu-young, the drama leans into its suspense roots with masterful tension, sleek visuals, and a tightly woven script that keeps viewers guessing.

And the chemistry? Thick enough to slice with a chaebol-black-card.

Don’t Miss Episode 2

The second episode of ‘The Kind Woman: Bu Se-mi’ airs May 30 at 10PM KST on ENA, with exclusive streaming on Genie TV immediately after broadcast, and available via streaming platform TVING.

If the premiere was any indication, the next twist could change everything—again.
